Hello to all my students and their families. This site will allow you and your family to access information needed throughout the year. Read our blogs and play educational game. Please take a look around and have fun.
If you would like to arrange a meeting with me regarding your child please contact the school office and I will return your call. You may also give your child a letter requesting an appointment and I will also get back to you to arrange a time suitable to both.

CLASSROOM INFORMATION
5H is a straight year 5 class with 29 students (14 girls and 15 boys) classroom teacher is Mrs Deidre Hauraki. Students must bring a school hat to school every day.

Homework: English and Maths - Monday through Thursday. Handed in Friday
"Homework is an integral part of the learning process. We are trialling a ‘homework grid’ this year. Research indicates that this format is more engaging for students and encourages greater communication between students and parents. Parents/caregivers are asked to check and sign homework when it has been completed. Your support is appreciated. Children are expected to revise spelling daily, read daily and complete selected activities. Spelling homework books are to be returned to class each Friday to be marked.
Mathematics homework consists of daily revision of times table and Maths Mental Book which is also due Friday.
Please see me before Friday regarding homework if for any reason you cannot do it due to other commitments.
A useful website parents are encouraged to visit is 'School A to Z' which can be found under the 'more' drop down box on the home page of our class weebly. Click on 'more' then 'For the Parents' then 'Tools and Tips for Parents'. it has many tips and ideas about children and their education e.g. videos demonstrating how maths is taught.

Term 1 Novel Study

The novel study for Term 1 is Chasing Rainbows by Lucinda Haslinger. The students are thoroughly enjoying the book and are learning to note take while listening to it being read. Parents are encouraged to ask their child questions about the book, this will consolidate their learning and help them with their comprehension skills.
Trevor is different from everyone; he is blind and now he finds himself away from his beloved farm life and thrust into city life by his foster parents in order to learn more about his background. He has his own system of measurement, his steps being measured in pumpkins (big steps), cabbages and broccoli. Whilst he has friends at the school he has to attend for a month, he also senses animosity and is the target for bullying. Brian is a student to be avoided at all costs, continually taunting him and making life difficult. Ronnie is desperate to be his friend but backs off every time Brian is around, and then there's Talia, the angel who takes him under her wing. This book doesn't reveal its secret until close to the end and it certainly surprised me. The books deals with the differences between country and city, cultures and interpersonal relationships. All the action is filtered through Trevor who struggles to understand his new environment.
Term 2 & 3 Novel Study
A Road to War - It's 1917 and the Great War rages in Europe. When Daffy Rowntree's brother goes missing in action, she refuses to sit safely in England, and determines to do something to help win the war. Soon she finds herself in the mud and horror of the battlefields of France, driving an ambulance transporting the wounded of the trenches.

During Term 2 students in 5H will be learning about WW1. World War I was a defining period in Australian history. Taking place only 13 years after the federation of Australia, it was one of the first major international conflicts in which our young nation had been involved.World War I began in August 1914 when Britain and Germany declared war on each other. In the same year, Australia followed Britain into war when the Prime Minister, Andrew Fisher, declared Australia’s support for Britain and 416,809 men enlisted to fight for Australia. Of these men, over 60,000 were killed and 152,000 were injured. One of the most significant events of World War I for Australians was the ANZAC landing at Gallipoli in Turkey.
